Poria is a fungus in the Polyporaceae family. It is also known as Poria cocos, Wolfiporia cocos, Fu Ling and Wolfiporia extensa. Poria cocos fungus is well known for its large sclerotium.
For thousands of years, Poria mushrooms been used in Eastern traditional medicine. Poria mushroom filaments have been used for loss of memory (amnesia), anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, tension, nervousness, dizziness, urination problems, fluid retention, sleep problems (insomnia), an enlarged spleen, stomach problems, diarrhea, tumors, and to control coughing.
It contains several substances thought to promote good health, including polysaccharides (known to enhance immune function) and triterpenoids (a class of compounds with antioxidant effects).
