Pinellia, common names are Ban Xia, Pinellia ternata and Rhizoma Pinelliae. It is a genus of plants in the family Araceae. Pinellia is native to Asia and now can also be found in Eastern North America. It is used for treating coughs and removing mucus out of the organism. The herb is pungent and warm thus breaks up phlegm.
Ginger has been used in the processing of Ban Xia since ancient times, and the two are often paired together in prescriptions because ginger reduces Ban Xia’s toxicity while strengthening its ability to harmonize the stomach.
Today, the most common forms of Ban Xia are Jiang Ban Xia (ginger pinellia)
